Managing Moving Day

Everything comes together on moving day, when a flood of last-minute details can seem overwhelming and the trip to your new home looms in front of you. Being prepared ahead of time for the little things and having a plan for surviving your trip can get you through this crucial event.

Tips To Get Your Moving Done With Less Stress
  • Look at hiring a moving company vs. renting a truck. Make sure you get bids from multiple companies.
  • Call to confirm your moving schedule a couple days in advance.
  • Make sure you have done your change of address. You can get a change of address card from the post office or do it online at USPS.com.
  • Start early on packing seldom-used items first. Name each box with its contents and room it belongs in.
  • Throw out as many items you never or seldom use.
  • Use towels and linens to protect breakables. If you don’t have enough use newspaper. Make sure you write Fragile on the box.
  • Put valuables such as jewelry, birth certificates, etc. in a safe place. Consider transporting them yourself.
  • Inspect the house one last time after everything is moved out for anything you might have missed.
  • Clean your new home thoroughly before moving in.
  • Decide in advance where you want your furniture.
  • List the numbers of local police and fire departments, doctors, and nearby hospitals.

It may be a good idea to plan out the day in half-hour increments. Seeing a picture of the day will ensure that you have some extra time between each leg of your journey. That way you can accommodate unexpected delays that could otherwise throw off your schedule.
